| Background | KRT81 (Keratin 81) is a type II hair keratin. It is a basic protein which heterodimerizes with type I keratins to form hair and nails. It is found primarily in the hair cortex. Mutations in KRT81 have been observed in patients with, monilethrix, a rare dominant hair disease characterized by beaded or moniliform hair that results from the periodic thinning of the hair shaft and shows a high propensity to excess weathering and fracturing. |
