DC-SIGN, a 44 kDa type II transmembrane protein also known as CD209, is a dendritic cell receptor
Dendritic cells (DCs) that control immune responses were found to capture and transport HIV from the mucosal area to remote lymph nodes: It has been postulated that DC-SIGN (CD209) serves as a receptor for capture, trafficking, and transmission of HIV to T cells.
DCs also amplify the amount of virus and extend the duration of viral infectivity. Multiple strains of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV bind to DCs via DC-SIGN; CD209 contains a C-type lectin binding domain and binds ICAM-3, ICAM-2, and HIV viruses.
