Background of WISP3 antibody
WISP3 is a member of the CCN (for CTGF, CYR61), and NOV gene family, which encode cysteine-rich secreted proteins with roles in cell growth and differentiation. WISP3 is likely required for normal postnatal skeletal growth and cartilage homeostasis. WISP3 is predominantly expressed in adult and fetal kidney and adult testis. Weaker WISP3 expression is observed in placenta, ovary, prostate and small intestine. WISP3 is expressed in skeletally-derived cells such as synoviocytes and articular cartilage chondrocytes. The CCN-family are implicated as regulators of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in the regulation of proliferation and initiation of specific differentiation pathways (Schuetze et al, 2005).
Defects in WISP3 are the cause of progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy of childhood. This progressive disease is a primary disorder of articular cartilage with continued cartilage loss and destructive bone changes with aging.
